Whileitisimportanttoprotectfiles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdriveorsolid-statedrive,
youalsomightneedtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFI
BIOS,orrecoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithproper
careandkeepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsystemonyourcomputer,youneedtoinstallthesupplementfilesand
ThinkPaddevicedriversforitatthesametime.
•IfyouinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,thenecessaryfilesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectories
onyoursolid-statedriveorharddiskdrive:
–ThesupplementfilesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
–ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
–ThepreloadedsoftwareprogramsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Note:Ifyoucannotfindthesupplementfiles,thedevicedrivers,andprogramsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,goto:
http://www.lenovo.com/Drivers.
•IfyouinstallanewWindows8operatingsystem,gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/Driverstodownloadand
installthelatestdevicedrivers.
Note:Theprocessofinstallinganewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseofarecoveryprogram.
Beforeyoubegin
Note:IfyourcomputerisequippedwithbothaharddiskdriveandanM.2solid-statedrive,youarenot
recommendedtousetheM.2solid-statedriveasabootabledevice.TheM.2solid-statedriveisdesigned
anddevelopedforthe“cache”functionpurposeonly.IfyouusetheM.2solid-statedriveasabootable
device,itsreliabilityisnotguaranteed.
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•IfyouaregoingtoinstallanewWindows7operatingsystem,copyallthesubdirectoriesandfilesinthe
C:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoidlosingfilesduringtheinstallation.
•Printtheinstructionsyouwilluse.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–InstallingtheWindows7operatingsystem
–InstallingtheWindows8operatingsystem
Notes:
–TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedontheWindows7operatingsystem(64-bit)andtheWindows
8operatingsystem(64-bit).
