Youdonothavetoturnofftheservertoinstallorreplaceahot-swapredundantpowersupply,hot-swap
harddiskdrives,hot-swapsolid-statedrives,orhot-plugUSBdevices.However,youmustturnoffthe
serverbeforeperforminganystepsthatinvolveinstalling,removing,orreplacingadaptercablesor
non-hot-swapdevicesorcomponents.
ToviewtheLEDsonthesystemboardandinternalcomponents,leavetheserverconnectedtopower.
Whenyouarefinishedworkingontheserver,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.
Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Attention:Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeen
removedfromtheserverandyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,
canseriouslydamageservercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandleserverpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,itisrecommendedtowearanelectrostatic
discharge(ESD)wriststrap,ifoneisavailable.EnsurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.
Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponents(suchasPCIcards,memorymodules,system
boards,andmicroprocessors)byedgesorframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleandpossiblydamagethedevice.
Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartoftheserverforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandyourbody.
Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitintheserverwithout
placingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecificsituation,placethe
static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton
thestatic-protectivepackage.
Donotplacethepartontheservercoverorothermetalsurface.
Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
Systemreliabilityguidelines
Tohelpensurepropercoolingandsystemreliability,strictlyfollowtheseguidelines:
Eachofthedrivebayshasadriveoradummytrayinstalled;orthereisanelectromagneticinterface(EMI)
protectivepanelorEMIshieldinstalledtoprotectthedrivecage.
Iftheserversupportshot-swapredundantpowersupplies,eachofthepowersupplybayhasaredundant
powersupplyinstalled,oronebayhasaredundantpowersupplyinstalledwhiletheotherbayiscovered
byashield.
Leaveadequatespacearoundtheservertoensurethattheservercoolingsystemworkswell.Leave
approximately50mm(2inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearoftheserver.Donotplace
objectsinfrontofthefans.Forpropercoolingandairflow,installtheservercoverbeforeyouturnonthe
server.Operatingtheserverwiththeservercoverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
Properlyroutethecables.Forsomeoptions,suchasPCIcards,followthecablinginstructionsthatcome
withtheoptionsinadditiontotheinstructionsinthismanual.
Whenreplacingahot-swapdrive,installthenewhot-swapdriveassoonaspossible.
Ifyourserverhasairductsorairbaffles,donotremovethemwhiletheserverisrunning.Operatingthe
serverwithouttheairductsorairbafflesmightcausethemicroprocessor(s)tooverheat.
